Cleveland in HDR – The 6th City Collection

The Cleveland Skyline – Cleveland got the nickname “The 6^th City” during the early 1900’s when its population made it the 6^th largest city in the country. Cleveland had the sixth largest population in the 1910, 1930 and 1940 U.S. Federal census.  As of the 2010 Census, the city proper had a total population of 396,815.  That makes Cleveland the 45th largest city in the United States. That being said Cleveland is part of the larger Cleveland-Akron-Elyria Combined Statistical Area, which in 2000 had a population of 2,945,831,  and ranked as the country’s 14th largest.

Today’s photo is of the Center Rd. swing bridge. Built in 1901 by the King Bridge Co., this is the last remaining swing bridge in Cleveland. For more info on this important landmark please visit:

It’s been a mild winter and in the next month or so the weather will begin to get even warmer.  Why not grab your bike and go for a ride? Cleveland and Northeast Ohio are a great place to go biking. There are and endless trails and places to explore in the city, the Metroparks and the Cuyahoga Valley. Try a bike ride though downtown Cleveland or University Circle. If the biking in the city isn’t your cup of tea why not try the parks and valley? You can ride along the historic towpath or bike the trails and catch the rairoad back to your car. Today’s photo was taken near where Cuyahoga River meets Lake Erie on a warm summer evening. I like this photo because it shows not only the river but a few of Cleveland’s amazing bridges and buildings in the background.

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment” – Jim Rohn

Everett Road Covered Bridge is one of the only remaining covered bridges in Summit County. However in the 19th century, it was one of over 2,000 in Ohio. The builders of Everett Road Covered Bridge used a truss pattern patented by Robert W. Smith of Tipp City, Ohio, in 1867. The bridge was also unlikely to have been built much after the 1870s.

The Detroit–Superior Bridge, also known as the Veterans Memorial Bridge is a 3,112 long through arch bridge over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. The bridge was completed in 1918, at a cost of $5.4 million. It was the first fixed high level bridge in Cleveland and its completion, the bridge was the largest steel and concrete reinforced bridge in the world. While the bridge’s upper level is for road traffic, the lower level was intended for streetcars. It was built with four sets of these tracks. Each end of the bridge has underground streetcar stations for the trams. While the steetcars no longer run some of the old tracks and streetcars remain. To walk under this
bridge is to step into the past.

Today the lower level of the bridge is used for “Ingenuity,” a large-scale, weekend-long performance event. It is my hope that his space can be transformed into something that can be used by Clevelanders year round.
